Reclaiming Valentine's: A Celebration of Love, Kindness, and Community

Thursday 20-02-2025 - 11:16

Valentine’s Day is often seen as a celebration for couples, filled with grand gestures, chocolates, and romantic clichés. But what if we reclaimed it as a day for love in all its simplest and purest forms—kindness, friendship, and community? That was exactly the vision behind the Valentine’s Day event I organized as part of Feel Fab February.

With over 40 students in attendance, the event was a vibrant, laughter-filled celebration that brought people together to enjoy games, live music, and meaningful conversations—all without the pressure of romance. It was about celebrating love in a way that included everyone.

The event featured a dynamic mix of games and entertainment designed to engage everyone:

Icebreaker Game: Guests picked numbers and played “Lemons with a Twist.” The final standing winner took home all the money in the jar, adding a thrilling competitive edge.

Love Wall: Sticky notes were provided for attendees to write love notes to themselves or others, creating a wall filled with positivity and appreciation.

Dance & Music: Amruta’s mesmerising dance performance and live music sets by Niamh Maclennan and Begho added a beautiful touch to the atmosphere.

Speech of your Life Game – members of each table had to nominate someone they wanted to receive a prize of a one week bus travel ticket who then had to give speeches that were voted on by the entire audience for best speech to receive the prize.

Table Swap Challenge: Attendees rotated tables and engaged in thought-provoking discussions, nominating someone for a special transport-related gift. To win, nominees had to recall all four names from their table—a true test of memory and engagement!

Valentine’s Trivia: A lively Kahoot quiz tested participants’ knowledge of love, pop culture, and history, with exciting prizes up for grabs.

The Perfect Match & Cupid’s Arrows: A hilarious game where guests search for their famous pair match in balloons.

The energy in the room was electric. Students who walked in as strangers left as friends. The event provided a space where everyone felt included, valued, and uplifted.

The love wall was filled with beautiful affirmations and heartfelt messages, reminding everyone that self-love and appreciation are just as important as any other kind of love. The competitive yet friendly games helped break the ice and encouraged bonding, while the live music performances elevated the mood and created a cosy, communal atmosphere. Niamh’s performance in Gaelic was electrifying and the international students present were very excited to learn more about Scottish culture.

For many, it was a much-needed break from academic stress and a chance to feel part of something bigger. The event reinforced the importance of social connection in student wellbeing and proved that Valentine’s doesn’t have to be about romance—it can be about togetherness, support, and fun. This event was more than just a fun gathering—it was a statement that love exists in many forms, and everyone deserves to feel appreciated and celebrated.

To those who attended—thank you for bringing your joy, energy, and open hearts. And to those who missed it—don’t worry, we’ll be back next year, bigger and better!

Until then, remember: Love is everywhere. You just have to recognize it.
